UCL Nature and Conservation Society

Established in 2016 by a group of students, staff and lecturers with a love for wildlife, we became a UCL Student's Union Society in 2018. Our aim is to build a platform to share ideas and to organise events and campaigns to raise awareness of issues concerning wildlife conservation, within and beyond UCL.

Our aims

  1. To provide opportunity for students and staff from all backgrounds to interact with nature at UCL.

  2. To use no single-use plastic and minimise the generation of material and food waste at all its events.

  3. To support nature conservation initiatives, research, and campaigns locally, nationally, and internationally.

  4. To promote and enhance biodiversity across campus, through the provision of habitat boxes, insect homes, and pollinator friendly planting.

  5. Campaigning for UCL to drastically reduce its use of single-use plastics across all departments by 2021, and proactively influence both the Student Union and UCL Environmental and Sustainability Policies.

  6. To promote vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets at UCL as well as the use of sustainably sourced and certified food, to reduce our impact on habitat and species loss.

  7. To continuously raise awareness, educate and campaign on the ongoing global threats of man-made climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecological collapse.

Activities

Home: What We Do

Mini-conferences

We hold regular mini-conferences discussing various aspects of conservation. Some of our past topics included Invasive Species, Re-wilding and Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Food and Consumption. Keep an eye out for our next one!

Bloomsbury Bird Walks

Connect with London's wildlife by joining us on our weekly walks around UCL and Bloomsbury on the search for birds! Walks take place on alternating Thursdays (9am) and Fridays (8:30am), meet in front of the Print Room Cafe. Check out the Student Union "What's On" calendar or our Facebook page for exact dates. The first ones will run as part of UCL Welcome Fair!

Field Trips

Last year, we organised multiple field trips to discover various green areas around London, including Richmond Park and Hampstead Heath. We also organised the Bloomsbury BioBlitz and went to help the Chagford BioBlitz in Dorset!

Campaigning

We have increased our campaigning and collaboration with members of UCL's management teams to increase the University's commitment to sustainability. Some of the schemes we support and promote include #DitchTheDisposable and #PlasticFreeUCL. However, we think that we can do a lot better than that!

Guest Speakers

We have been honoured to meet and listen to renowned scientists and conservationists, including BBC wildlife presenter and entomologist, George McGavin, speaking on important conservation topics. We can't wait to announce our next speaker!

March for Wildlife and Climate Change

We are worried about the state of the natural world and fully support peaceful protests for political action! Read the People's Manifesto for Wildlifehere: https://www.chrispackham.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Peoples-Manifesto-Download.pdf
